How did you first hear about Cell-Crete and get started in the industry?

My grandfather was a finisher for about 22 years in the union before he retired. Later, he got my father into the company and he stayed with Cell-Crete for 30+ years. He retired about a year and a half ago and sometimes comes in to work part-time.

What is a typical day like for you on the job?

My day is a mixture of tasks. Right now, I take the first half of my time working on bids and on project management, and the other half of my day is out on the field walking on job sites.

What’s one of the best things about working here?

For me personally, it’s just having the opportunity. I started off at 19 years old in general labor. At 23, I was already a foreman—I had my crew and spent 10 years doing that. At 33, I became Superintendent and eventually, I became Project Manager. There’s a lot of opportunity to grow here.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Cell-Crete?

I would say all the stuff we’ve worked on in Las Vegas. Most of my experience is working on the casinos out there. I’ve been on top of most of the towers, sometimes 55 stories up in the air on top of all those casinos. I probably spent a good 7 years M–F in Las Vegas.

Any advice for someone just starting in this industry?

I guess overall, it’s already a pretty good company. The biggest thing is that everyone respects each other. I have a cousin that’s a foreman, his brother who also works with the company and other uncles who have worked here too—anytime you see a lot of family members, you know everyone wants to work there.

How do you define success?

Success for myself is all the stuff I was able to do here. We’ve really grown from only having 2–3 roof crews. I like seeing the company grow because we’ve worked on some impressive projects—casinos, hospitals, even some NASA/JPL patchwork, etc.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m married with 2 kids: a son (7) & daughter (4). We’re big on being outdoors, camping, the beach, fishing, hunting, etc. We try to go to Colorado at least once a year. We’ve had lots of family trips to Montana, Hawaii—a lot of outdoor trips.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I went to Cal Poly Pomona for 2 years and started working here part-time (over summers, spring breaks). Eventually, I took off a quarter and worked full-time…I ended up choosing to stay at Cell-Crete.

I also played music in school (saxophone, drums, marching band). When I left, I played in a ska band for 5 years. We traveled all around LA and Riverside.

What is the next item on your bucket list?

Since I’m big on being outdoors, I want to buy a trailer and travel to places like Mammoth, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Zion. I think it’d be nice to see more people visiting state parks.
