The Project
The Val Vista Transmission Main Rehabilitation Priority 5 is a vital continuation of an extensive infrastructure project, playing a crucial role in delivering 220 million gallons of drinking water per day to approximately 60% of the population in Phoenix, Arizona. This rehabilitation effort utilizes advanced trenchless technology, which minimizes disruptions to the surrounding communities while significantly extending the lifespan of the aging and deteriorating transmission main by over 50 years.
As part of this project, a 91-inch steel liner was installed to reline the existing 96-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) over a distance of more than 4,000 feet. The annular space between the steel liner and the existing pipe was filled with a cellular concrete grout material, with a density of 50 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). The annular grouting operation was completed from inside of the pipe and fed through grout ports in just 10 days, demonstrating the effectiveness of annular space grouting in trenchless construction with cellular concrete.
