The Project

Five years after the original Mt. Charleston Lodge was destroyed by fire in September 2021, the rebuild is beginning to restore a familiar landmark for mountain visitors. The lodge has long served as a destination for guests looking to reconnect with nature, enjoy the surrounding cabins, and experience the rustic character of the area.

 

As part of the resilience mindset on this job Cellular concrete was placed on the lower levels of the lodge to raise the deck elevation and create a lightweight, stable fill section without adding unnecessary dead load to the structure. This approach is well suited for applications where finished elevations must be built up over a slab or structural deck while maintaining control over weight, grade, and constructability.

 

By using cellular concrete, the project team was able to provide uniform support across the lower deck areas while reducing the overall weight compared to traditional aggregate fill. The material also helped establish consistent grades for the finished walking surface, improving the transition between structural work and subsequent construction activities.

 

The lightweight fill solution supports efficient construction by reducing material handling demands, limiting added structural load, and providing a workable base for follow-on trades. Once cured, the cellular concrete creates a consistent, durable substrate that helps the project maintain proper elevations and move toward completion. As the new Mt. Charleston Lodge continues to take shape, this scope reflects the importance of selecting materials that meet both structural and practical construction needs while supporting the overall vision for a renewed mountain destination.
