The Project
San Juan Generating Station, New Mexico; Following the retirement of the plant’s last two units in 2022 and the subsequent demolition activities—including the controlled implosion of the smokestacks in August 2024—cellular concrete is being used for abandoning the 10-foot diameter circulation lines and associated pipelines in place from the old coal plant.
Utilizing approximately 38,000 cubic yards of Class II cellular concrete, the project involved injections spaced at 800-foot intervals. This method not only ensures effective abandonment of the lines but also minimizes site disturbance. The flowable nature of cellular concrete enhances ease of placement and reduces the amount of material delivered to the site. Making it particularly advantageous for remote sites like San Juan, where logistical challenges abound due to the distance from cement plants.
