The Project
The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is excited to announce the ongoing Terminal 3 West Modernization Project, a transformative $2.6 billion initiative aimed at revitalizing the western half of Terminal 3, with an anticipated opening in fall 2027.
One of the key challenges faced during this project was the creation of new footings and foundations, which resulted in a depression that required filling to meet bottom of slab elevation. Given the active airport environment, access was limited, necessitating a fill material that could be efficiently pumped over distances of at least 800 feet from the equipment.
To address this, cellular concrete was selected as the ideal solution. Its unique properties allow it to flow easily over long distances and be placed efficiently through a concrete hose, ensuring that the fill could be delivered precisely where needed without disrupting airport operations. 1,000CY of class III material were placed in just 2 days creating minimal impact to ongoing construction trades and passengers.
